Hoogland, where most of the Karsten group’s onions are grown, is located between the 32-nd and 33-rd lines of latitude and the onions grown here are referred to as 'intermediate' onions. These onions are known to have excellent shelf life and are therefore suitable for both the local and export markets.
Onions are 'cool weather' plants and that is why the Swaarmoed region near Ceres, where onions are grown at nearly 1000 meters above sea level, is such a high quality growing region.
The Karsten Group’s Brown Onions are marketed between January and May.
