Chilean group Subsole has been named “Best Supplier in the Southern Hemisphere” by UK retail giant, Tesco PLC, during the retailer’s annual awards dinner in London.

Tesco’s “Produce Grower & Supplier Awards 2009” recognises the commitment of suppliers to the UK supermarket chain.

Subsole, which exports citrus, avocados, table grapes, cherries and kiwifruit, was chosen as the winner in the category “International Grower & Supplier of the Year Award” in the Southern Hemisphere.

“The award acknowledges the work and commitment shown by the company to understand and support the business of Tesco,” said Tim Lee, produce manager for Tesco. “This award recognises the dedication and hard work of our suppliers.”

In a letter to his team, Miguel Allamand, president of Subsole noted, “This is a tremendous recognition, not only for Subsole, but also for Chile. From this remote corner of the world, Chile is capable of competing against many other countries and companies, with excellence in both fruit quality and service, and win this award. We have every right to be proud.”

Tesco is the third-largest supermarket chain in the world after Wal-Mart and Carrefour, with 4,300 stores across the globe and recorded sales of US$99.7bn.

The company currently operates in China, Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, the UK, and the US.
